Out she comes
So I will lay out the chain of events for your entertainment.
When I got the car home the motor was without an intake manifold , carb and a few other parts(lots). We decided based on the previous owners info to try and put a mechanical oil pressure guage on the motor and turn it over to see if we had pressure and we did 25 pounds as a matter of fact. Well hells bells thats good lets put her together and see what she runs like. So off I go and buy all the shiney stuff we need to make this baby run and get it all installed. Theres a few issues with just plain old worn out wiring and I have worked my way through that mess but one thing that kept bugging me was the factory oil pressure gauge and its reluctance to co operate despite me treating it nice with new wiring so I said screw it those idiot lights are crap anyway lets spend some dollars on a nice three gauge set of 2 inch Stewart Warner gauges. Well damned if the new oil gauge said the same thing the factory gauge said f%%^&$##$#$%%^&^&. Basically the oil pressure just drops off the chart as the engine warms up, my buddy who is helping me has built engines for 40 years has had it. You know what its like when you take over a job someone else started and did not finish and gives vague or lousy info as to how much or what was done we he darn well hates it so out she comes. He is thinking its loosing pressure as the oil thins and is getting past worn bearings although there is no knock or bearing noise but its going somewhere. He is just building a 428 CJ so I am up next just as well I have this cruise ship job to get finished and a Parisienne to do after as well as three yachts lined up so I have way to much to do and I need to get this motor apart so he can lift it out in about two weeks. We/he is going to tear it down find the problem get more shiney internal stuff and put her back together. I was a bit po`d abit mad abit frutrated alot frustrated but after clearing my head this will be ok. Its only February at worst it will be on the road by the end of March and I will have a new motor and parts that I know are good. It will also give me a chance to clean and paint the engine bay and clean up the rest of the wiring so thats a good thing, might as well get some headers now I guess. So that was my day oh I did get the new rear brakes done today so at least I can stop once I can go. Is it a full moon?

Sounds like you are having all kinds of fun. I personally would have pulled the pan off and at least looked at the bearings and crank. However if the engine is still in the car, before pulling it, I would have tried changing the oil sending unit, it could be faulty. Nothing to loose at this point.

I hear what you are saying but at this point I am done with the unknown. It needs to come out to put headers on and for me to paint the engine well so I am ok pulling it. I am not out anything but time at this point and really I am too busy to drive it right now anyway so pitter patter

Re: Out she comes
Well the motor is apart and its not to bad at all, just a stupid mistake by the previous owner. When the motor was put together the oil pick up was not tight so it was able to flop around and somehow had got itself sideways thus the poor oil pressure. All the engine plugs are good and tight the main bearings however are not and will be replaced. The pistons are new and 60 over they are not even discoloured yet, rod bearings are good, cam is good so a set of mains a bunch of gaskets and its done. Big relief as I was having the traditional wtf why me thoughts. So onwards and upwards lets get er done eh

Re: Out she comes
Thats great news Reg, it,s a good thing you pulled it apart. If the pickup tube was that lose, it could eventually broke off, and that wouldn't be good.

It would have for sure especially with me trying to keep BF Goodrich in business two tires at a time! The rest of the motor looks really good just waiting for the parts now.

If BF. Goodrich, goes down, you can always help Mickey Thompson, stay out of the Red.

Re: Out she comes
An update on the motor. Since it was out and mostly apart we decided to just go for it and tear it right down seeing as there was some stupid stuff done. No surprise but the valves had no guides wtf and the pistons wrist pins had clips sitting in there that were not needed. Obviously even an upholster can see this was a screwed up mess from the start. So the good news is the block has had a nice bath and will get a nice new paint job with shiny new bearings going in. Pretty lucky to get away with gaskets and bearings and now we know whats in there and whats not pretty good piece of mind. Hopefully I get the weather to power wash the engine well this weekend and then let it dry up and paint. I have a new engine wiring harness on its way so sometime after Easter it will be back together and ruining perfectly good tires and entertaining grandsons

I`ll say but not to impressed with the honesty of a dad and his kid, good life lessons you are teaching there dad. I am going to build a 340 this winter if I find a good block so at least when I sell this motor I can tell the prospective buyer exactly what they are buying.

Maybe he just didn't know any better. Is it possible someone else built the motor and he was just passing on to you, what he thought to be true ?

No he knew they had the motor partially apart and in the big scheme of things its worked out for me in a good way. I bought the car for the body any way not the motor its just another head shaker in the world of used vehicles.
